Working Toward Peace

I am a free-lance writer and artist. I write for a regional magazine here in Florida, and sometimes I do feature articles, sometimes I do news briefs, and sometimes both.

The other day I was asked to do a news brief for a new pre-school for children ages 2.5 to 5 that is opening in my area. It was a delightful experience to write this article because of the impact it may have over time on the “peacefulness” of the world. All things start somewhere, and this little school is hopefully just the start of something big—something REALLY big!

Let me tell you about this little school. It’s innovative and it’s peacemaking. It focuses on daily kindness, tolerance and diversity activities. There will be 3 classrooms of seven learning centers each and are designed to help children prepare for kindergarten academically, socially and emotionally. Even a small boat on the playground has been named the “S. S. Peace.”

Art easels made for 2 to 4 children to paint side by side, and cooperative tricycles holding 2 or more children are going to be available. Buddy gardens are being created, pairing children who don’t naturally get along well, to learn to work together.

These are very creative ways that children can be nurtured emotionally and are just as crucial as academics are to a child’s development. I wholeheartedly support endeavors of this kind, and my wish is that the world will sit up, take note, and follow in their footsteps!

Forcing a child to interact with others when they don't want to is just wrong. Many children are not nurturing or are loners, there is nothing wrong with that. Allow them to be themselves.
I have Aspergers syndrome which is not usually diagnosed in children and it would have been plain cruel to force me to be tolerant and loving towards others, it may have also ended up with other children being hurt as I could not tolerate the closeness.
Not all people are suited to this 'ideaistic' view of how people/children 'should' be.
Also, personalities clash, this is not a bad thing but should be acnowledged.
