The Rod & Reel
By Janet Merryman
If you are visiting the Gulf Coast of Florida, and are in the area of Anna Maria Island, you must include a dining experience at the Rod & Reel Pier Restaurant. Located at the very northern tip of the island, the Rod & Reel is historic, fun, reasonably priced and has a view to die for! I moved to the island 5 years ago, and have developed a real affinity for this place. I don't think it is just because it happens to be the first restaurant where I dined after the move. I think it is because.....the food is awesome, it won't break your wallet AND the servers are friendly and extremely capable. I also believe since they have been there ever since I've been here, this must be a good place to work. Now, I am not a seafood LOVER. I know that seems amusing, given where I live, but I just don't love seafood. I like SOME seafood, just not a lot. However, after my second or third time eating at this restaurant, someone said "you MUST try the grouper." I was not anxious to do so, but finally I broke down and tried the garlic grouper. I guess I won't tell you how many times since then I've had the grouper at the Rod & Reel. I've had garlic grouper, regular grouper, salsa grouper..........you name it grouper, and I have had it. It isn't just good--it is scrumptious! (Is that still a word?) When you have finished your grouper, or whatever delicacy you may have consumed, then you will most likely be asked if you want to try the key lime pie. Now we know here on Anna Maria Island that we are a few miles--actually a few hours--away from the Florida Keys. But.........even the Florida Keys does not serve any better key lime pie than you will get here. I think I remember eating here only three times when I did not see dolphins playing in the bay. Of course, that is such an added treat, those frolicking dolphins. And you can also see Egmont Key, and the cities of St. Petersburg, and Palmetto from the pier at the Rod & Reel. Egmont Key is such a cool old island. As you get closer to the island, you can still see ruins of the old fort from the Spanish-American War. (Now, please don't quote me on this one, I am not 100% sure about that history, but I have been told the fort is from that war). That area is also fabulous for the shark lovers of the world. They say if you want to fish for shark, there's your spot. There are great restaurants all over this wonderful little paradise of an island called Anna Maria. And I like lots of them. But the Rod & Reel? Yep..........it's my favorite!!! |
