Sandy and Sammy Sand Dollar
I live very near the beach. I love the beach. I often write about it. It is part of my soul, I know. I can be really stressed or angry or sad, and if I go to the beach (which I often do), I can be there for less than 5 minutes and feel better. One day I was at the beach and a family of vacationers caught my eye. I watched them for some time, because their activities were somewhat distressing. The sand dollars were plentiful that day—live ones, that is. The family members (there were 5 altogether) were scraping up the sand dollars off the ocean floor and bringing them into their chosen spot on the beach in stacks. Each of them had stacks of about 15 inches high and they made several trips doing this. They must have had somewhere near 1,000 sand dollars. Then they took several and began playing “Frisbee” with them. For some reason, I felt really bad about this activity. Though I wanted to say something to them about our laws here in Florida that say you can only take two (2) live specimens, I refrained, not wanting to cause a conflict of any kind. But I really found it distressing. When I returned home later that afternoon, I started to research on the internet whether sand dollars have a nervous system of any kind that would cause them pain. Unfortunately I could not seem to locate any information that could tell me the answer. Actually, I still wonder what the answer to that is. However, it seems to me that all living things should be respected and I felt like those sand dollars were not being respected. I even considered writing a children’s story entitled “Sandy and Sammy Sand Dollar” which would actually be a story told from the sand dollar’s perspective. I may still do that. Yes, a sand dollar is a living thing, too. And seeing them is part of the enjoyment of being at the beach. Won’t you do your part to protect our precious ecosystems?
