Rio Grande Valley Hurricanes
As a very young child in the early 50s, my family and I lived for 5 years in McAllen, Texas, a beautiful little town in the Rio Grande Valley. I remember a few severe storms back then, but only one of them was called a hurricane during our residence there. I can remember the beautiful palm trees were bent clear over like they were just rubber bands. They were lying almost on the ground from the force of the wind, their “tallness” stretched out almost on the ground. I don’t remember being frightened, just mostly in awe of the power of the wind and rain. Today, over 50 years later, basically that same area is being pummeled right now with another hurricane. This one has a name—Dolly. I don’t recall if hurricanes were given names back then. If they were, who knows what the name of that one was. When my brother retired a few years ago, he moved back to the Rio Grande Valley (to Harlingen, which is very near McAllen) and is there now. As Dolly presently shrieks her mighty force, I just hope that he and all the people will be okay and that there will be no deaths or major destruction. The ONE good thing that seems to come out of weather disasters is that many people unite, working together to help each other as best they can. As I sit here in my calm and currently hurricane-free Florida home, I can’t help but hope that in the aftermath of Dolly, those people will once again rise above this storm and show their strength and courage and unity. My thoughts are directed to that outcome.
