How Do You Know How to Trust Auto Repair Businesses?

I had some car repair issues today. I wasn't thrilled. There are many more ways I need to and would rather spend my money. So how do you know who to take your car to; how do you know who to trust?

In the past, I have discovered that some auto repair businesses are honest and above-board, and some are not. Because I'm a female, I've even had some businesses think that because of my gender, they can "put one over on me."

Before I moved to a different state, I had a couple of friends who took good care of my repairs. They really knew what they were doing, and they did the work for an extremely nominal labor charge (in a couple of instances, they didn't even charge for their labor!). But they are over 1,000 miles away and no longer an option for me.

So how does a person go about finding a truly reputable auto repair business? If you are totally new to the area (like I was), and do not even know anyone, that is a real challenge! Sometimes you just have to go with your intuition, however, here are some things I've discovered that may be helpful to others in this situation:

1. Ask around. Ask your realtor or landlord, or the restaurant owner where you are eating your evening meal. Ask the checkout person at the supermarket, or your hairdresser. Ask at the bank where you just opened your new accounts. Ask a neighbor. Surely one of these people will at least know of someone who had to have a car repair even if they have not. And one of those people will make a recommendation based upon their own experience or that of a close friend or relative. There actually is no better advertisement than the old "word-of-mouth" recommendation. That is a good start!

2. So now you have decided on a car repair business. In my mind the next important steps are: do they give free estimates, or if not, what is their estimate charge? Will they allow you to see what they are doing to your car? Will they show you the belts they say need replacing, or will they show you the dirty air filter, or will they try to keep some of this information from you, using the excuse that you are not allowed in their repair area for safety reasons? Personally, I would be suspect if they refused to allow me to see what they are telling me needs to be done. The place where I took my car today was very congenial about showing me what needed to be replaced/repaired. They didn't even blink an eye or hesitate in any way when I asked to be shown these things. That alone built my confidence in them that I could have some level of trust in them to work on my car.

This place had been recommended to me by a friend and I believe I made a good choice by using their services. I would go there again if necessary, and I would also recommend them to others as well. Hopefully, I will not need a car repair service for a long time to come, but if any of you reading this will need a similar service, I am pleased if you find my experience and this information useful.
