Going to the Beach

I went to the beach yesterday. I live a block and a half from the beach. Someday I plan to live ON the beach. I love the beach. I moved to Florida because of the beach. Does it get any better than a beach? Especially one with the softest, sugary-white sand that feels like you are walking on velvet?

Well, of course, I don't think it does get any better than that. Not everyone would agree with that, and that's okay. If everyone did, the beaches of the world would be too crowded for my taste. I often go to the beach by myself, because that is one of the places where I can really get in touch with my soul, even though I really do know that I can get in touch with my soul no matter where I am. It just seems to be easier and more meaningful at the beach.

Yesterday, I went with 4 other friends. I have been enjoying two of them as houseguests for the past week, but the other two live down here, too. They do not live on the island, but they live not far from me. We all swam in the Gulf yesterday, because the water is now warming up nicely, although to the tourists, it's been warm enough all along (even in February!). It was joyous to watch the swimmers and the other beachgoers. I've yet to see anyone be angry who is at the beach. Of course, I am sure some people DO get angry at the beach, but it has not been my experience to see anyone like that. The beach really seems to bring out the best in people. They are friendlier, more tolerant, more laid back, and just plain more pleasant.

Yesterday there were more varieties of shore birds on the beach than usual. Mostly we see the gulls (as in Jonathan Livingston Seagull and his buddies) and the sandpipers (some of my absolute favorites--I wish I had their energy!). Yesterday, however, we watched a small white egret fetching its afternoon snack for quite some time. Then there were several ibis (they are usually in the yards after a rain, so it was really fun to watch them at the water's edge). And there was an astonishingly beautiful great blue heron walking proudly up and down the beach. We always have numerous pelicans flying about, but I never get tired of watching them either.

Then there was the little boy who wanted his dad to bury him (almost) in the sand. He was about 5 and he laid so very still for about 20 minutes while his dad shoveled lots of the soft, white sand onto his little body. Then suddenly, he'd had enough and he quickly freed himself to scamper back out into the water.

The glorious Florida sun was reallllyyyy warm yesterday (89 degrees), but there was a wonderful breeze that gave us all great new hairdos; some of us got a little too much sun (especially the northerners), and some of us just added a bit more to our already tanned bodies. Some of us did some shelling, and some of us walked on the beach, and some of us just sat under the big, colorful umbrella we had brought along. All in all, it was a perfect beach day (but then again, is there an imperfect beach day?)!!!
