Gemstones...the Flowers of the Mineral Kingdom
Ahhh……the mineral kingdom! Not only is there astonishing beauty to behold, the stones and crystals of our earth can also contain amazing healing properties. Yes, “rocks” are pretty, and as young children, most of us were delighted to dig up a colorful rock out of the dirt. Often a child’s first collection is an assortment of stones they may have gathered from the bottom of a shallow stream, or picked up along a favorite walking path. So why are we attracted to gemstones? There is evidence of gemstone usage for their healing properties as well as their beauty way before recorded history. Archaeologists have discovered through the years that ancient civilizations such as those from Egypt, Africa, Europe, Russia, China and Japan, for example, used crystals for healing, for talismans, for amulets, and for jewelry. Native Americans of all the Americas used crystals and stones in ceremonial rituals, and also for healing. Since recorded history began, India was the country where the chakra system of healing started. Placing gemstones on the body during meditation was a practice that began in India as well. When a person does meditate with gemstones, or just holds them in their hands, they have quite an effect! Gemstones can fill a room with healing energy, and they can also absorb the negative energy in a room. Yes, the healing crystals and gemstones have been used for centuries throughout all cultures, religions and empires. They are mystical, beautiful, and insightful “energy medicine” tools. The energies of the mineral kingdom are universal energies. Also known as a form of vibrational medicine (a term used to describe a variety of “living” remedies), crystal therapy involves the application of crystals and gemstones to facilitate healing. They house spiritual and healing properties that can be utilized in a variety of ways, such as being carried in a pocket, or worn by a person. They can be placed in a location where their healing energy can be felt by whoever is nearby. Energy healers can also place stones on a client’s reclined body to balance the chakras. Each type of gemstone does its own unique “work.” So, vibrational medicine uses the “chi energies” within living organisms such as plants, water, sunlight, gemstones and crystals. Most everything we see around us has a “living pulse” inside of it, so we need look no further than the planet we live on to take advantage of our natural remedies to help us balance the chi energy within our own bodies. Crystals can work on all levels and all chakras. Holding a crystal in your hand magnifies your magnetic energy, can intensify your psychic abilities and can sooth the mind/body/ spirit. They also contain energy that can be accessed for expressing love, for communication and for bringing about those things that we desire in life. Recognizing the beauty and loving energies of gemstones can greatly enhance personal development. Gemstones are delightful to give or receive as gifts. Since they are Mother Earth's natural healers, gifting someone with a crystal is akin to offering a healing. They also so beautify your home--just with their presence. A beautiful quartz crystal sitting on a coffee table can be magical, especially if the sun shines on it during specific times of the day. Just looking at that beauty can transform a less-than-desirable attitude and make a person feel more at peace. Some people like to set aside a specific space in their homes—a rather personal space—as an “altar” to be used for meditation, introspection, prayer or inner solace. This practice on a regular basis is especially healing and balancing. Most altars like this have one or several gemstones included in their layout, as well as candles, flowers, perhaps a cloth, or other symbolic items that pertain to spiritual or personal development. An altar is a very personal space and it’s important that it contains those things that will bring about the most peace and focus. Don’t feel like it is necessary to have it “perfect” and don’t feel like it cannot be changed. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of different types of stones from which to choose. The more well-known stones are: amazonite, amethyst, amber, aquamarine, aventurine, azurite, bloodstone, carnelian, cat’s eye, chalcedony, charoite, chrysocolla, chrysoprase, citrine, coral, feldspar, flint, fluorite, garnet, goldstone, hematite, iolite, jade, jasper, kyanite, labradorite, lapis lazuli, larimar, lepidolite, malachite, moldavite, moonstone, obsidian, onyx, opal, peridot, pietersite, quartz (clear), quartz (smoky), rhodochrosite, rhodonite, rose quartz, serpentine, sugilite, tanzanite, tiger eye, topaz, tourmaline, turquoise, unakite, and zoisite. Perhaps the most well-known of ALL the gemstones is the rose quartz. Widely known as the “stone of gentle love,” rose quartz is usually a very soft pink, but can also be a golden white. It emits a calming, cooling energy which can work on all the chakras to gently remove negativity and to reinstate the loving, gentle forces of self-love.¹ It can bring peacefulness and calm to relationships and it promotes receptivity to the beauty of art, music, and the imagination. This mineral is quite effective in the treatment of conditions relating to the emotional body, balancing the love emotions of the upper four chakras—heart, throat, brow, and crown chakras. Rose quartz can act as a rejuvenating agent for both the physical body and the emotions. It is an excellent energy for healing emotional “wounds.”² An excellent source of reference is the book “Love is in the Earth” by Melody. This book identifies hundreds of gemstones, their meanings, and also the healing properties contained therein. It is also possible to intuitively choose the crystals that would be useful for you. Notice which stones you are attracted to. You can sort through an entire box of beautiful gemstones and you will end up choosing one or two or three. The reason? The vibrational resonance of the gemstones interacts with the vibratory resonances of your mind, body and spirit in a very wholesome way to allow you to make the choices that are appropriate for you. Some other informative book choices for learning about gemstones are: “Laying on of Stones” (D. J. Conway), “The Crystal Bible” (Judy Hall), and “The Art of Stone Healing” (Sonia Alexander). Treat yourself soon to a soothing, relaxing, healing “hot stone massage” with one of your favorite massage therapists. This is another modality that employs the wonderful stones of the mineral kingdom. Your body, mind and spirit will be grateful!* *The practice of using the healing gemstones is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Contact your doctor or healthcare provider if you have any questions regarding your or your family’s health. ¹ and ² Excerpts taken from “Love is in the Earth” by Melody.
