Alkaline vs. Acidic Blood

By Ada Hawkins

How Does Alkaline and Acidic Blood Affect Healing and Youthfulness?

Acidic blood and chronic dehydration are common conditions among patients with chronic pain, and a person with low blood pH generally has acidic blood. Typically dark in color, acidic blood has low oxygen content, and oxygen is what allows the body to extract, transporting and storing energy from the blood and the nutrients we consume. Healing is compromised when blood has low oxygen content and when dehydration is present.

Diagnostic testing can assist in determining pH levels and can also indicate the type of diet that is best for you. Testing the pH levels in saliva and urine are part of this process. By following an appropriate diet and utilizing regenerative programs like prolotherapy or spinal rejuvenation, overall healing and anti-aging often results.

Treating acidic blood requires a person to consume foods and supplements that neutralize or “alkalize” the blood pH. Avoid acidic items such as caffeine, sugar, wheat, citrus fruits, soda pop and potatoes. Quality protein, “good” fats, fresh organic vegetables, and certain supplements can help to neutralize acidic blood. Good protein sources are nuts, seeds, brown rice or soy products and adequate amounts of protein for soft tissue growth are essential for healthy ligaments and tendons. The reason protein is essential in the diet is because collagen, which makes up the ligaments and tendons, is the most abundant protein in the body. Collagen is the building block for ligament and tendon tissue. Supplementation containing amino acids can also be very beneficial. Glutamine and Branch Cain Amino Acids (BCAA) are wise choices and are best ingested just after exercise and before bedtime.

Extensive research consistently reveals also that dehydration produces a reduction in the shock-absorbing capabilities of the intervertebral discs and articular cartilage which places additional stress on the ligaments in its attempt to stabilize the joints. It is very important, therefore, for chronic pain patients to drink lots of purified water (1/2 their weight times ounces per day) along with a mineral salt to carry the water into the tissues. Proper hydration can dramatically improve the body’s regenerative capabilities.
